Shoulder weeks before a beach high season
High season on the Andaman coast is a long full stretch, roughly from the later part of November through April, with the exact edges different in Kata, Karon, and the quieter bays. The shoulder just before it is the awkward part. A few strong weekends arrive early. Midweeks can still look like the green season. A monthly figure for November blends them.
Last year's charter is not a season
We have drawn houses whose November looked wonderful because one charter series landed for three weeks and did not return. The following year the same month opened with a fright, and the fright was the more ordinary shape. A comparison that does not name the charter will scold a team for a gap that was never theirs to repeat.
The useful drawing splits the shoulder into weekends, midweeks, and any series or group that will not be on the books again. It also marks rooms out of order for the annual close-up that many beach hotels still do in late October. Those rooms were never going to be sold. They should not sit in the empty count as if demand failed.
Chiang Mai is the mirror image
In Chiang Mai the cool months fill and the shoulder that worries managers is often September, still wet, with the cool-season groups not yet willing to confirm. A beach calendar copied onto a northern house will staff the wrong weeks. If an owner holds both, we draw two sheets and we do not average them.
Rain itself is a night-level fact. A week of heavy rain in the shoulder will push walk-ins and day trips away and may also delay a group on the road. The ledger should say so in the remarks column. Without that remark, next year's reader will treat the dip as a change in the market.
What we hand the opening of high season
For a beach hotel we like a ninety-night brief that starts in the shoulder and runs into the first full weeks. The manager sees the turn happen on the sheet, rather than hearing that the season has begun because the lobby feels louder.
